Two locomotives, 13 train cars involved in Regina yard derailment

A freight train travelling through the CPKC rail yard in Regina caused a significant derailment on Saturday.

Patrick Waldron with CPKC Communications said in a statement to CJME News that the derailment happened just before 10 a.m. when a train moving through the yard derailed a number of cars carrying shipping containers.

Waldron explained the derailed cars then hit an empty potash train parked on an adjacent track, and said two locomotives and approximately 13 cars were involved.

There were no injuries and there is no risk to public safety, he said.

Tafsir Rasin, who owns Aqua Detail Inc. across the street from the rail yard, said he was in the parking lot when he saw the two trains make contact.

“On my rear-view camera. I saw like another side train just crash into this one, which is like lying on the ground right now,” Rasin said.

The impact produced a loud noise and sent his employees outside to see what had happened.

“Oh yeah, it made it like a very loud shake,” Rasin said. “That’s why we were like, ‘What’s going on out there?’”

Rasin said passing trains regularly create noise around the business, but he immediately sensed something was different Saturday morning.

“Usually we hear loud noise because of the train,” he said. “I thought that’s what it is, but here there’s something different going on.”

A video Rasin recorded immediately after the derailment was timestamped at 9:48 a.m., matching CPKC’s account that the incident happened shortly before 10 a.m.

From the area around Eighth Avenue and Broder Street, several cars could be seen lying on their sides, while others were tilted along the tracks. Crews remained at the site Saturday as the railway began its cleanup and investigated what caused the derailment.
