Environment Canada has issued tornado watches for some areas of east-central Saskatchewan, as conditions are “favourable for the development of funnel clouds today,” according to the Environment Canada website.
The watches are in effect for areas around the Rural Municipality of Parkdale, including Glaslyn and Fairholme and the R.M. of Meadow Lake, including Waterhen Lake First Nation.
Environment Canada said conditions will be “favourable for the development of funnel clouds (and) will last until early this evening.”

According to the website, “these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.”
There may not be an immediate danger, as weak rotation typically doesn’t cause damage near the ground. But if the rotation intensifies, it could lead to weak landspout tornadoes, Environment Canada cautioned. If conditions become more favourable for tornadoes, the weather organization will issue further watches and warnings.
Environment Canada said that landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but noted they can still be dangerous.
“They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.”
It also advised people to prepare to take shelter if a funnel cloud develops in their area.
