Two men charged after Regina police chase ends in Lumsden

Two men are facing a number of charges after leading Regina police on a lengthy chase in an allegedly stolen vehicle Wednesday night.

Police located the vehicle in the area of Victoria Avenue and Athol Street, after it was reported to have been driving dangerously. Officers notified the Air Support Unit (ASU), which tracked the vehicle as it travelled through the city at speeds of up to 180 kilometres per hour.

Police say that, due to the high speeds, officers on the ground did not pursue the vehicle. Instead, the ASU continued to track it as it drove south out of the city.

The vehicle took several grid roads, eventually ending up in the town of Lumsden, where police say it nearly struck several other vehicles head-on. The driver eventually turned onto the train tracks before losing control of the vehicle and going down a steep embankment.

The two suspects inside ran from the vehicle and officers began tracking them with assistance from the ASU and the Regina police canine unit. One suspect was found nearby in the bushes. He refused to comply with officers and assaulted the police service dog, police said.

The dog bit the suspect in the process and the suspect was eventually taken into custody. The second suspect was found in a nearby building and arrested without incident. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries that police say were suffered in the collision.

A 42-year-old man is charged with possession of property obtained by crime and break and enter, as well as driving offences. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants.

A 32-year-old man is also charged with possession of property obtained by crime and resisting arrest. Both made their first appearance in Regina Provincial Court on Wednesday.
