BADDECK — Schools and government offices in parts of Cape Breton are closed after torrential rains destroyed roads and triggered a local state of emergency over the weekend.
A slow-moving storm dumped more than 200 millimetres of rain in some areas of the Nova Scotia island over less than two days.
At one point, 120 roads were closed or damaged and 200 culverts were washed away from driveways and major routes.
Officials also say two damaged bridges will need to be replaced.
Victoria, Richmond and Inverness counties remained under a local state of emergency on Tuesday and regional centres for education in those areas said all schools were closed for the day.
The Nova Scotia Community College’s Strait Area Campus in Port Hawkesbury and Wagmatcook Learning Centre are also shuttered.
The government has closed the Access Nova Scotia office in Port Hawkesbury as well as the registry of motor vehicles in Baddeck.
