Dakota Dunes donates $200,000 to Saskatoon Food Bank

A big donation from Dakota Dunes will help the Saskatoon Food Bank establish its new location on Avenue P South.

The Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation announced a $200,000 donation to the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre on Monday, which the two organizations said marks “a major milestone” for the purpose-built space that will bring all of the food bank’s operations together under one roof.

“Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation is pleased to invest $200,000 in the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre’s new home,” Tribal Chief Mark Arcand, the chair of the corporation, said in a statement.

“Investments like this reflect DDCDC’s commitment to strengthening communities and supporting organizations that are creating meaningful opportunities throughout the communities within its catchment area. We are proud to contribute to a project that will serve people today while helping build a stronger foundation for the future.”

The food bank sees an average of 24,000 people using its services each month, the two organizations noted in a joint statement, and 40 per cent of its clients are children.

“This meaningful investment in community will strengthen access to nutritious food and learning opportunities, while building pathways to better days ahead,” Laurie O’Connor, the food bank’s executive director, said in a statement.

“Thanks to Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation’s belief in the work we do, the food bank’s new home is now one step closer to becoming a reality!”

The food bank said its capital campaign is gaining momentum as it works toward the move to the new centre, which is expected to open in the fall of 2027.
