‘I’m not shocked’: Grieving mother responds to murder charge

Standing outside Prince Albert Provincial Court and surrounded by supporters, Danica Moore expressed feelings of relief and sadness over news that a 14-year-old has been charged with the murder of her daughter.

The youth, who appeared in court for the first time on the charge on Friday, said nothing beyond confirming the pronunciation of his last name. He was remanded to Oct. 21.

“I’m not shocked, because this was a person we had suspicions of,” Moore said.

Peyton Flett, 14, was reported missing on June 30 and her remains were found on Aug. 13. A week later, on a day when Peyton should have been celebrating her birthday, a vigil was held on the city’s riverbank near the MMIW monument. Moore was asked by reporters how she felt about the news of the arrest.

Flett was born and raised in Prince Albert, but has family connections to Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

Prince Albert police have stated the investigation remains ongoing and have asked anyone with information to come forward, no matter how small the detail may seem.

paNOW learned that in addition to the murder charge, the youth also had an outstanding gun-related charge. As for Moore, she confirmed she won’t miss any of the upcoming court dates.

“I’ll be here every step of the way. I am not missing any second or any minute of it.”
