Tyler Bieber and Brody Hinz were among the people killed in the Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash two months ago.
Not that they will be forgotten, but the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) are helping to commemorate their passionate sports work by commissioning a memorial award in their names. The award is for the best-prepared athlete at Humboldt Collegiate, where Bieber was a volunteer coach and Hinz was a Grade 12 student.
One of Hinz’s former classmates, Dylan Larson, a multi-sport athlete who mentored his younger teammates, was the inaugural winner at the school’s athletic awards night Tuesday. Tyler and Brody’s families were represented at the ceremony.
The FRC felt a closeness to them because Bieber was the radio play-by-play announcer for the Broncos and Hinz was the team’s volunteer statistician. Bieber used to have a website dedicated to the CFL, where he interacted with numerous FRC members. And FRC members know the importance of having a good stats guy, like Hinz. The award is a simple, but meaningful gesture.
