Chris Jones has the media wrapped around his little finger and it’s becoming quite comical.
Reporters always want to know who’s going to start at quarterback for Jones’ team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, when they open their CFL schedule Friday against the visiting Toronto Argonauts.
Jones told another media scrum Tuesday that he’s known for two weeks who is going to start, but he’s not going to let the Argos know by telling the media. And he legitimately doesn’t have to publicly announce his starter.
In actuality, Zach Collaros became Saskatchewan’s starting quarterback in January when the Roughriders acquired him from Hamilton and slightly trimmed his salary to $430,000.
Brandon Bridge gets paid less than half that amount, so he is the backup. The idea that there was a competition for the starting role through training camp and the preseason, well, that’s downright laughable.
Neither quarterback has distinguished himself, but the fact that Collaros regularly works out with the first-team offence tells the story that Jones won’t tell.
