The future of two Regina pools is up for discussion at a committee level public meeting on Thursday.
The city has released its Recreation Master Plan, which will affect Maple Leaf and Wascana pools.
The original plan was to close the aging Maple Leaf pool, first built in 1946. After a protest in December, council decided to rebuild it in the same location by the summer of 2020.
Wascana Pool will close at the end of this summer, to be turned into destination aquatic centre.
The first step is to hire a consultant to help with the design process of both the new Maple Leaf pool and the aquatic centre.
When council decided to replace Maple Leaf pool, it did not have a plan on how to pay for the estimated $4.5 million cost. The city plans to bring forward a financing plan for the construction of Maple Leaf and Wascana pools through the 2020 budget process.
The Heritage neighbourhood will be consulted in the first quarter of 2019 on additional programming to fill the gap during construction of the new Maple Leaf pool.
Demolition of the Maple Leaf pool will begin in the spring. Construction on the new pool will start in early 2020 in time to be complete by that summer. The current Wascana pool will be demolished after the summer of 2019, replaced by the new aquatic centre by the summer of 2021.
The Recreation Master Plan also calls for more indoor aquatic facilities, off-leash dog parks, accessible playgrounds, cricket pitches and outdoor skate parks, among others.
The city plans to reduce the number of hockey arenas, ball diamonds, basketball courts and spray pads, while improving the ones that remain.
