The Regina Airport is ready for ridesharing.
James Bogusz, CEO of the airport authority, says the facility has created lane space in its short-term parking lot for commercial vehicles.
“We support any mode of commercial transportation that the city authorizes. Whether it’s cabs, Ubers, Lyft or limo drivers, any of those types of options we support at YQR. We just require the operators to contact us for a commercial licence,” Bogusz said.
He said the move is about giving customers more choices to get around.
“We did see some growth in passengers last year of 1.5 per cent. We’re really pleased with that and there have been people asking us about rideshare, more so in the last month or so. We’re letting everyone know we’re ready when they are,” he said.
To accommodate more operators, Bogusz said the airport needs to ensure there’s enough capacity, including curb space and signage. He said the authority also need additional security to mitigate congestion.
As for getting Regina Transit to offer service at the airport, he said the authority is looking forward to speaking with the city on how that might be possible, adding that there’s space where Greyhound used to stop.
“Perhaps with some modifications that the city requires, we do believe we’ll be able to work with the city on any infrastructure they may need to make transportation work,” he said.
“We do know the decision to provide transportation to the airport is not free and it’s going to require some discussion on how they want to look at that.”
