March Madness has begun as 64 teams over three weeks will see buzzer-beating upsets, top-seeded blowouts and Cinderella stories likely ending a game or two short.
But let’s not forget about the amateur basketball players here at home who will live their own basketball dreams in similar fashion.
Hoopla hits the hardwood tonight in Saskatoon for 5A girls and boys. Tomorrow, it’s smaller schools of Langham, Middle Lake and Coronach in the 1A girls and boys. The gyms around the city will be full of hope, despair, big plays and, on Saturday, champions will be crowned.
It could be the last game for Grade 12s who will move on to think about grad dresses, dates and where their future will take them. Some will continue their basketball careers, but most won’t.
Bench players will get the experience and hope they’re back again in bigger roles in years to come.
While Lumsden never made it to Hoopla when I was in high school, those basketball road trips and teams are memories I won’t soon forget.
But I guess I can’t hide allegiances now. Go Angels in 3A girls.
