Vince Carter wants to come back for a 22nd NBA season and I’d love to see it end where it all started.
Now, there is likely no need for the Toronto Raptors to sign a 42-year-old who will turn 43 mid-season. But a kid can dream, right?
And I say kid because I was in Grade 12 when Carter was drafted, traded to the Raptors and then became rookie of the year. Vinsanity took over Toronto, and trickled across Canada.
Vince’s arrival in Toronto was at a time when the team was young and Michael Jordan was in the twilight of his legendary career. For Canadian kids who were turned on by the game because of Jordan, now we had a similar star playing for a Canadian team.
Vince’s impact on Canadian basketball can’t be understated. Many Canadian players, especially from Southern Ontario, point to Vince in Toronto as the thing that led them to the sport of basketball.
And it’ll be interesting to see, with Toronto back at contender status with DeMar DeRozan and now Kawhi Leonard, what kind of impact that will have on the next generation of Canadian basketball.
But for now, my 18-year-old self will dream of Vince Carter ending his career in Toronto, winning his first-ever championship.
OK, I really am dreaming.
