WOW.
That was the general reaction to the news Saturday that 29-year-old Andrew Luck was retiring from football.
The Indianapolis Colts quarterback walked away from a game he loves and tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars he could have made over the next 10 years.
But injuries spiralled him into what he calls a dark place. A few years ago, it was a shoulder injury that seemed to not progress — and that’s when Luck first talked about his mental well-being taking a hit when he couldn’t play.
And now an ankle injury put him back there, in the darkness that many speak of in terms of mental health.
Andrew Luck is taking care of himself and good for him.
And to the fans who booed him Saturday, you’re the problem in the discussion around mental health. You have to toughen up and suck it up; your problems can’t be that bad.
That’s the stigma that has to end. People have to listen rather than react.
And when you listen to Andrew Luck, there is no doubt that he’s making the right decision for himself and that’s all that matters.
