I have one wish for this Labour Day Sunday.
I want a classic.
They dub it the Labour Day Classic, but sometimes the games are nowhere close to classics.
But we remember Rocky Butler or Kerry Joseph’s run like they were yesterday. It’s the best part of an experience of Labour Day. I remember being on hemorrhoid hill watching the Riders win or lose, but the crowds used to be the story of the game because the teams rarely were in the race for a Grey Cup.
But recently they have been competitive, and the matchups have got so much better.
That’s why this weekend as we see the Riders and Bombers duel — for the first time since 1954 atop the division — I want it to be the game we talk about 10, 20 or 30 years from now.
Will the hero be Cody Fajardo or Shaq Evans for the Riders? Or maybe Chris Streveler will live in Blue Bombers lore with a win.
Hopefully it’s another game we remember where we were when it happened.
Those are the ones that make sports great.
