I am clearly lost when it comes to the CFL wanting to set a tougher precedent for repeat offenders.
Simoni Lawrence’s play has made the CFL discipline him three times this season. And in a step to stiffen penalties, the CFL has gone backward.
The Tiger-Cats linebacker drove his shoulder into the head of Edmonton quarterback Logan Kilgore, who was in a very vulnerable position.
Last year, the league handed down a one- and then a two-game suspension for Kyries Hebert, who is a repeat offender for helmet-to-helmet hits.
Now that was being tough on repeat offenders.
With Hebert out of the league, Lawrence now takes the crown of the league’s dirtiest player and should feel the brunt of his bad decisions.
A two-game suspension followed by a fine and then a max fine isn’t being tough on repeat offenders. It sends the wrong message.
Another two-game suspension, or a three-game suspension, would actually show fans the league is getting tougher on unnecessary and dangerous play.
