After the sign-stealing scandals of the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, it’s clear Major League Baseball isn’t too torn up with both the 2017 and 2018 championship teams having tainted their titles.
The Astros were hit with fines, their manager and general manager were hit with suspensions and of course the team lost draft picks.
That brings us to the Red Sox discipline — and get this. With Alex Cora already out in Boston as the manager, the only person in the Boston organization that is facing discipline is their video replay guy, who is out of work for this season and will have to be in a different job in 2021.
This reminds me of baseball’s steroid era when it was clear Bud Selig was looking the other way when his hardest hitters were getting bigger and bigger, the home runs were getting hit more often and fans were loving it.
So it should be no surprise Rob Manfred, who worked closely with Selig for 20 years, is using a slap on the wrist for scandals that deserve a much heavier hand.
