The Match was a ratings success.
With more than 5 million viewers in the United States, Sunday’s golf telecast topped the early rounds of the U.S. Open and the Masters.
And it was another sign of how hungry sports fans are for live action. It had four big personalities and it gave NFL fans a glimpse at Peyton Manning and Tom Brady away from the game for which they’re known.
The fact the members of the foursome were mic’d up gave even more to the value, allowing us to hear the barbs being tossed back and forth on the course and with the broadcast crew.
There was everything from Phil Mickelson breaking down a complex chip shot like a science formula to Tom Brady telling Charles Barkley to shut it after holing out for eagle.
It was a great initiative for a great cause, raising $20 million for various charities.
And again it should show everyone that, if done right, the more access and inside the game you can take the fans, the better you’ll do.
Credit to Tiger, Phil, Peyton and Tom for their willingness to be mic’d up because it’s usually the players and coaches who quickly reject this type of access.
