Saturday night likely gave us one of the greatest World Series games that won’t matter.
So I want to give it some love and give it the credit that it deserves.
The back and forth of the Tampa Bay Rays’ comeback in the bottom of the ninth, with a two-out, two-run, error-filled final play in Game 4 was one of the craziest finishes we’ve seen in baseball’s World Series in a while.
Seeing the unlikely hero in Brett Phillips doing the soccer-style airplane celebration with Randy Arozarena at home plate slamming his hand down in disbelief is an all-time image.
The game had three lead changes in the final four innings.
It was an instant classic — but it’s likely to be forgotten in the years ahead.
The Rays are now facing elimination and down 3-2 overall. That Game 4 win is meaningless except for the entertainment value it gave us.
Unless the Rays come back to win the series, Brett Phillips will become a cult hero for Rays fans like Ed Sprague or Candy Maldonado are for Jays fans.
