Hideki Matsuyama made golf history at Augusta on Sunday, but was anyone watching?
Yes, Matsuyama became the first Japanese player to win the Masters and also the first male Japanese player to win any of the four major golf championships.
But don’t be surprised when the ratings come in that it was another low mark in Masters history. Could it even be as bad as last year’s, which was the lowest since the ’50s? Quite possibly.
Remember, Dustin Johnson walked away with a historic win as well last year, with the lowest score ever posted. But it wasn’t exactly interesting watching Johnson stroll to victory.
Then there is the Tiger factor. Woods was out of it last year as the defending champion, struggling to a 38th-place finish after his monster win the year previous. This year, there was no Tiger at all. In fact, there was little star power in the final pairings on Sunday.
Oh, and all sports are suffering from dropping viewership throughout the pandemic.
Viewership in Japan, however, should be at an all-time high. And like Mike Weir’s win in 2003 for Canadian golf, we’ll see if Matsuyama’s victory will make for a generational surge in Japan.
