The father of a man who was sent to prison for manslaughter is heading to jail himself.
Michael Dennis Morrissette pleaded guilty Friday in Regina Court of Queen’s Bench to being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Court documents say Morrissette helped his son escape despite knowing the younger man had caused the death of a Regina man in March of last year.
The elder Morrissette initially was charged with second-degree murder, but that charge was withdrawn.
The 43-year-old was sentenced to 1,095 days behind bars, but was given 1.5 times credit for his 481 days spent in remand. As a result, he’s to serve 373 days in the Regina Correctional Centre.
He also was required to submit a DNA sample.
His son, Michael Douglas Morrissette, initially was charged with second-degree murder, but the 22-year-old pleaded guilty June 7 to the lesser included offence of manslaughter. He was sentenced to eight years in prison minus time served.
On March 5 of last year, Regina police officers were sent to the 1400 block of Sixth Avenue for a report of an injured man, who was later identified as David Anderson. Paramedics took the 36-year-old to hospital, where he died.
Anderson was Regina’s fifth murder victim of 2020.
