Last week, Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson resigned from the Saskatchewan Party caucus as she had not given proof of her COVID-19 vaccination status.
Wilson said she no longer supports the government’s direction and, in an interview with Gormley on Monday, claimed the government is chipping away at people’s rights.
NDP Leader Ryan Meili said Premier Scott Moe has fostered those who share Wilson’s views, as shown by his resistance to use public health orders.
“When it came to masks, he was slow to promote masks. He left spaces for anti-mask protesters (and) he still has failed to stop anti-vaccine and anti-health-care worker protests from happening outside our hospitals,” Meili said.
“He has talked about personal responsibility for far too long when we needed vaccine mandates in place. He has dragged his heels in every way he can to allow space for the kind of views of Nadine Wilson.”
The party said Wilson had misrepresented her vaccination status while the MLA said in an interview with Gormley that she had never disclosed her status to anybody.
The Government of Saskatchewan provided a statement to 980 CJME in response to Wilson’s claims, saying: “The events that led to Nadine Wilson’s resignation from caucus were exactly as the Premier described them.”
Meili thinks there are others in the party with similar beliefs.
“Otherwise, why would (Moe) have spent so much time pandering to those views instead of acting to protect Saskatchewan people?” Meili wondered.
Wilson will sit as an independent in the Legislature.
