Olivia is on a nine-year winning streak.
According to eHealth Saskatchewan, Olivia was the most popular baby name for girls born in Saskatchewan in 2023 — the ninth straight year that name has topped the list.
Oliver was the most popular baby name for boys born in the province last year, ending the nine-year reign of either Liam or Noah. Liam was the No. 1 name on the list from 2014 through ’20 before Noah held the title in 2021 and ’22.
Oliver’s previous high in the past 10 years was second in 2018.

As of data published Feb. 3, there were 50 baby girls named Olivia born in Saskatchewan in 2023. That name was joined in the top 10 by Emma (47), Sophia (36), Charlotte (35), Ivy (33), Ava (29), Ella (29), Isla (29), Aurora (28) and Sophie (28).
There were 63 baby boys named Oliver in the province last year. The rest of the top 10 comprised Noah (60), Liam (57), Leo (53), Jack (45), Theodore (41), Levi (40), Hudson (33), Lincoln (33) and Ethan (32).
A release from eHealth said the lists included some new names in 2023.
For the first time ever, Muhammad made the boys’ list at No. 19. Isabella was on the girls’ list for the first time in eight years, at No. 13.
“Baby girl names that did not carry over to the 2023 top 20 list were Willow, Abigail, Scarlett, Chloe and Mia,” the release added. “More than one-third of the most popular baby boy names from 2022 didn’t reappear on the 2023 top 20 list: James, Benjamin, Walker, Asher, Maverick, Luke and Elijah.”

A preliminary count for 2023 said there were 12,832 live births registered in Saskatchewan as of Feb. 3 of this year. There were 13,363 live births registered in 2022.
The numbers don’t include Saskatchewan mothers who gave birth outside of the province.
