8:30 – Yesterday, the federal government announced its Safe Social Media Act for youth under 16. Its goal: to make social media services and AI chatbots safer for children. The act will require social media companies to restrict children under 16 years old from their platforms, but it won’t force AI chatbot platforms to do the same. Val Caldwell, public speaker and online safety educator for children and adults, joins the show to share her thoughts on the legislation and whether she thinks it’s a positive change.
Listener Question: Do you want to see a full social media ban for youth, or is a restriction best?
9:00 – Open phones – Evan goes to the phones to chat with listeners about what’s on their minds today. Call 1-877-332-8255.
9:30 – Gary Mason, a national affairs columnist for the Globe and Mail, recently dived into the numbers Alberta separation supporters probably don’t want to hear. If Alberta were to become independent, he says, thousands would lose their jobs, the GDP would crumble, and that’s just the start. He joins the show to explain where the numbers came from and what they could mean for not just Albertans but Canadians as a whole.
LQ: Do you really think Alberta could separate, and would it still be worth it if their economy took decades to recover?
10:00 – New data shows rents in Saskatchewan rose 2.3 per cent in June. Nationally, rent prices are falling, but here we’ve had 47 consecutive months of rent increases. This has sparked the Saskatchewan NDP to renew its call for rent control, but of course, that is complicated. To delve into this, Evan is joined by Landon Field, CEO of Rental Housing Saskatchewan.
LQ: Does Saskatchewan need rent control?
10:30 – Dogs are a man’s best friend, but they don’t always start that way. Bringing a new animal into your life can be a lot of work, and it requires the right training! Derrick Fox, professional dog trainer, joins Evan’s show to share his training tips and tricks and to take YOUR calls about your four-legged friend!
LQ: Professional dog trainer, Derrick Fox, joins the show to take YOUR dog-related questions. Call 1-877-332-8255 to join the conversation.
11:30 – Most of us think sailing is something you do on the coast or on a tropical vacation, but it turns out you can learn the same skills right here in Saskatchewan. From their base on Lake Diefenbaker, Living Sky Sailing School is helping people go from complete novice to confident sailor—with some eventually taking the helm on charter boats around the world. David Larwood, owner and instructor with Living Sky Sailing School, joins Evan now.
12:00 – Evan revisits his conversation with Val Caldwell, a public speaker and online safety educator for children and adults.
