Two Saskatchewan RCMP officers were seriously injured in a shooting in Melville on Sunday night.
According to police, the shooting happened while officers were responding to a report of an assault at a home on Eighth Avenue West in the community southwest of Yorkton at around 9:35 p.m.

“As officers arrived at the scene, a firearm was discharged, and two Melville RCMP officers were struck,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“Both officers were transported to hospital by EMS with injuries described as serious in nature.”
After a standoff that lasted until 2 a.m., police said the suspected gunman – an adult male – and another person came out from the home.
“The suspect was arrested and remains in custody. The other occupant was initially detained but released shortly after. The second occupant has since been cleared of any involvement,” the RCMP said.
“Charges have not been laid. As such, we are unable to provide any additional information about the individuals arrested at this time.”
Despite the fact two police officers had been shot, the RCMP said police assessed the risk to the public and decided against issuing an emergency alert.
“Ultimately, an alert was not issued as the suspect was contained to a residence and officers determined there was no elevated risk to public safety,” the Mounties noted.
“Investigators do not believe there is any further elevated risk to public safety associated with this incident.”
At a news conference on Monday morning, the RCMP said the two injured officers were taken to a Regina hospital where they are believed to be in stable condition, but no further details were available.
“I don’t have an additional update right now on the status of our injured officers,” said chief superintendent Murray Chamberlin, criminal operations officer with the Saskatchewan RCMP.
“Our thoughts are with them, their families and our colleagues.”
Chamberlin said the officers were not inside the home, but were approaching the residence at the time of the shooting.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day,” Chamberlin added.
“It highlights how unpredictable the work can be, and I’m proud of the professionalism and courage shown by all of our members last night.”
The Mounties said the public can expect to see an increased police presence in the community as the investigation continues.
On social media, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe shared a message of support for the RCMP.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the two seriously injured RCMP officers, their families, friends, colleagues, and the entire Melville community. Every day, law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities and keep Saskatchewan families safe,” Moe wrote.
“We are grateful for their service, courage, and commitment, as well as for the first responders and medical teams providing care and support during this difficult time. On behalf of the people of Saskatchewan, we are hoping for their full and speedy recovery and stand with all those affected by this senseless act of violence.”
