Regina police open investigation after two people found dead on Elphinstone Street

Police in Regina found two people dead in the city’s North Central neighbourhood early on Tuesday morning, and an investigation is underway.

According to police, officers were called to the 1100 block of Elphinstone Street at around 4:30 a.m.

“Upon arrival, officers located two deceased individuals in the vicinity,” the Regina Police Service said in a statement.

“Officers secured the area and requested the additional resources of the Regina Police Service Major Crime Unit and the Regina Police Service Forensic Identification Unit.”

Police asked the public to avoid the area, adding that no further details – including the identities of the two dead individuals – will be released while the investigation is in its early stages.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is also participating in the investigation, police said.

Anyone with information that could assist police was encouraged to get in touch with the Regina Police Service or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Neighbours heard bangs, screams in early morning

Linda thought it was the boom of fireworks that startled her awake at 4 a.m. Monday.

She wouldn’t give 980 CJME her full name because she feared for her safety.

“I thought, ‘Oh no, not again.’” she said. “I went back to bed until I woke up to all of this.”

Linda didn’t know what had happened until a police officer came to her house asking for video surveillance.

The yellow house across the alley was at the centre of a police investigation, with people walking in and out of the building.

“I feel sorry,” she said. “I asked the one cop and he didn’t think there was kids. There was usually two kids playing in that yard.”

Other neighbours heard screams following the bangs, but Linda didn’t.

Michael Burt thought the booms were a car backfiring around dawn.

“There was two loud bangs in quick succession,” he said.

A police officer later informed him two people “died in a shooting.”

“I’m shocked. I know this can be a rough neighbourhood at times,” he said.

He said he didn’t think his cameras caught anything a block over on Elphinstone Street.
