Murray Wood The end of the great Canadian game as we know it
The last Roughrider home game was the last CFL game in Saskatchewan played on a CFL-sized field. Murray Wood thinks it's...
Zach Collaros could miss one game, two games, six games, the entire season or . . . his CFL career could be over.
Nobody wants a serious scenario, but anything is possible when a concussion is involved. After starting two games as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quarterback, Collaros has suffered another head injury, at least the third of his pro career.
Concussions can be cumulative, getting worse as the hits continue. That’s why it was risky for the Roughriders to obtain Collaros from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the offseason and slightly trim his salary, to a gaudy $430,000.
When Collaros got knocked out of Thursday’s 40-17 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks, there were lots of people nodding their heads and saying, “Told you so…” The Roughriders save some money if Collaros lasts his full stint on the six-game injury list, but he could be activated earlier.
In the meantime, Brandon Bridge becomes the starting quarterback after spending last season as a strong-armed, scrambling replacement for veteran Kevin Glenn. Bridge makes about half of Collaros’ salary and is about to show if that’s money well-spent.
