Right in the middle of an explosion of golf interest, Saskatchewan’s Graham DeLaet is unfortunately moving to the sidelines.
DeLaet told the Green Zone a couple weeks ago a troublesome back injury was preventing him from playing on the PGA Tour. He was in Saskatoon for the DeLaet Cup, a junior tournament that’s become part of his charitable fundraising efforts. Now he’s going to be away for 6-12 months because he’ll undergo microsurgery on discs in his back. DeLaet has had similar surgery and recovered, so hopefully, Saskatchewan’s best golfer can bounce back again.
DeLaet’s announcement came days after the riveting 2018 British Open, which Francesco Molinari won after being challenged by Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
The Canadian Open starts tomorrow, with incessant reminders that a Canadian hasn’t won since 1954. Next month the LPGA’s CP Open comes to Saskatchewan for the first time. Canadian phenomenon Brooke Henderson is among the headliners.
Golf will continue without DeLaet, but it’s better when he’s playing.
