A doctor originally from Regina, who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic to reunite families who were separated by international borders, is now facing criminal charges and is suspended from practising in Saskatchewan and Ontario.
According to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), Dr. David Edward-Ooi Poon was charged in November and December with multiple counts including sexual assault, voyeurism, and making and possessing child sexual abuse material.

It says Poon was first charged with two counts relating to child sexual abuse and exploitation material by Toronto Police on Nov. 4.
An additional 41 charges were laid Dec. 11 and the CPSO suspended his certificate of registration the following day.
Some of the alleged offences date back to 2014.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS) says Poon agreed to restrict his practice to adults on Nov. 17. He was suspended Jan. 26 “pending the outcome of an investigation pursuant to s. 48 The Medical Profession Act, 1981.”
Its website lists Poon’s current practice information as the Population Health Unit based in La Ronge. He has been quoted in news stories as a northern medical health officer with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
Poon founded an organization called Faces of Advocacy. He made multiple appearances on media outlets during the pandemic calling for bi-national families to be reunited and for greater oversight of the Canada Border Services Agency.
