An aggravated assault in Regina has turned into a homicide investigation.
Around 4 a.m. on Aug. 14, Regina police received a report of an injured person in the west alley of the 1400 block of Wascana Street.

When officers arrived, they found 37-year-old Rebecca Autumn (Wilson) Mathieson with significant injuries.
Despite being taken to the hospital by EMS, Mathieson died on Aug. 30. Her death marks Regina’s fifth homicide of 2026.
“Investigators with the Regina Police Service Major Crimes Unit are working with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service to determine the circumstances that led to the victim’s death,” the Regina Police Service wrote in a news release.
Regina police did not mention any arrests in the release and asked anyone with information that could aid the homicide investigation to contact police.
Homicides in 2026
Regina’s first homicide of the year happened on Jan. 19, when 56-year-old Michael Norman Ross was found dead in an abandoned vehicle in the city’s North Central neighbourhood.
Four people have been charged in connection with the crime.
The city’s second homicide happened on April 13, when officers were called to the 3100 block of Fifth Avenue in North Central just after 1 a.m. Upon arrival, police found an injured man, later identified as 36-year-old Miles Anderson.
While officers attempted life-saving measures, RPS said Anderson was declared dead at the scene. Two men were charged with second-degree murder.
Regina’s third and fourth homicides happened just days before the aggravated assault against Mathieson.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 11, officers were called to Elphinstone Street in North Central. They found 42-year-old Sarah McGillis and 37-year-old Arland Nahnepowisk dead outside a home.
Two women and one man have been charged in connection with those deaths.
Regina recorded 11 homicides in 2025.
