Photos: Fierce thunderstorm slams Regina with torrential rain, flooding

Streets became lakes in Regina during a fierce early morning thunderstorm Sunday morning, and Environment Canada says the severe weather could also impact this afternoon’s Riders game, with kickoff for the Labour Day Classic set for 5 p.m.

Dan Fulton, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the storm that hit the Queen City was part of a storm system that began in the United States, with parts breaking off and moving north.

“Little impulses are rotating around that and moving through the province and triggering some pretty decent thunderstorms,” he told CJME News this morning.

Fulton said the storms cover a large area of central Saskatchewan.

“There’s a fairly large complex of thunderstorms this morning located more or less between Regina and Saskatoon — a fair bit to the southeast of Saskatoon — but pretty close to Regina, and a fairly large area of thunderstorms with some pretty good rain and probably some decent wind gusts in there as well,” said Fulton.

As for rainfall amounts, Fulton said the Queen City will likely see a lot.

“If the heaviest stuff goes over Regina, we’re looking at rainfall rates of about a millimetre a minute which is the highest I’m seeing, which is pretty good. If it stays over there for any length of time, you can expect some localized flooding with this,” he said.

As for this afternoon’s Labour Day Classic Roughrider game, Fulton said football fans should dress accordingly.

“We’re expecting some redevelopment of the storms late afternoon,” he said.

“It may be fine, or it may not. We’re still kind of dealing with this summertime regime of thunderstorms, and these ones are pretty unpredictable. There’s no real obvious trigger that you can tie to starting them off. So yeah, definitely be prepared, but keep your fingers crossed. It may well be a beautiful evening as well,” he said.

One surprising sight for our CJME reporter was no flooding in city underpasses. During a downpour on Aug. 30, Regina Police Service closed the Albert Street at Saskatchewan Drive and Broad Street at Saskatchewan Drive/Dewdney Avenue underpasses due to extensive flooding.
