Sask. ministers to join largest Canadian trade delegation to India in 30 years

For the second time this year, Saskatchewan will send a trade delegation to India, and for the second time, will join with a Canadian delegation while there.

Trade and Export Minister Warren Kaeding and Advanced Education Minister Ken Cheveldayoff left on Friday for the week-long mission.

Kaeding is expected to take meetings with business and government leaders, talking about food security, critical minerals, energy and sustainability. Cheveldayoff was set to meet with post-secondary institutions in India.

“Saskatchewan has found a strong and reliable partner in India,” said Kaeding in a news release.

“We are looking forward to further strengthening this relationship in the days ahead. As we continue to grow our province’s economy for the benefit of the people of Saskatchewan, India remains an important partner to advance our shared food and energy security priorities.”

India is Saskatchewan’s 10th-largest agri-foods trading partner by volume, worth about $447 million dollars in 2025, according to provincial government numbers.

On Wednesday next week, Saskatchewan’s delegation will join up with Canada’s, led by Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu. The Canadian delegation will comprise some 300 people, and will be the largest trade delegation Canada has sent to India in 30 years.

The federal government said the goal is to expand commercial relations and build new partnerships to create good-paying jobs at home.

Sidhu will be working to “deepen Canada’s trade relationship” with India, including working on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement.

The last time Saskatchewan sent a delegation to India was in February this year. Premier Scott Moe took meetings while there and joined Prime Minister Mark Carney’s delegation.

Coming out of that mission, Canada resumed work with India on the comprehensive economic partnership, and Saskatchewan came away with a $2.6 billion deal for Cameco to supply uranium.

The February mission cost Moe’s office $63,501 in trip expenses.
