It was the middle of the day, when smokers ran into King’s Head Tavern behind the Northgate Mall, telling employees that someone in the parking lot had a sawed-off shotgun.
Sherry Scherle is the bar manager and was working when a possible abduction happened at noon on Tuesday. She said police officers arrived at the scene in less than two minutes.
“They responded very quickly, I had a whole parking lot full of police in no time whatsoever,” said Scherle. “When they showed up, I showed them the video surveillance cameras and let one of the officers take a picture of the one vehicle.”
In a release, police said a vehicle with a single person inside pulled into a parking lot, and a small black car pulled up behind it. One of the suspects exited the black car with what appeared to be a gun and pointed it at the driver of the vehicle. Police said the driver exited the vehicle and was forced into the small black car another suspect was in. Both vehicles drove away and no shots were believed to have been fired.
Police said they were not able to identify the individual who was abducted, whether it was a man or woman or where they might be right now. Police are still investigating the context of the situation and aren’t yet saying if it was targeted or gang-related. The victim isn’t considered missing at this point because police don’t know exactly who they’re looking for.
Scherle believes that person is now in danger.
“I hope the person is found before it’s too late,” said Scherle.
The violence found its way to the doorstep of her workplace after a weekend of multiple shootings across Regina.
Scherle said she feels like crime is getting out of control.
“I don’t even feel safe half the time walking around. You hear about gun shootings and stabbings. Where is it safe anymore? It’s not any designated area of the city. It’s happened in the whole city,” said Scherle.
After working at the bar for more than 20 years, Scherle doesn’t feel any less safe going to work, adding she’s not going anywhere. While she admits King’s Head Tavern gets a bad rap, she assures this incident had nothing to do with the bar. She said people in the vehicles were not customers leaving the bar and didn’t step foot inside.
“A lot of people think it had something to do with us, it didn’t. It was just an incident that happened in a parking lot. It could have happened anywhere.”
