Woman facing two murder charges after deaths on Elphinstone Street: Regina police

A 19-year-old woman is facing two murder charges in connection with two deaths on Regina’s Elphinstone Street on Tuesday morning.

According to police, officers responding to a report of a shooting in the city’s North Central neighbourhood at about 4:30 a.m. found a 42-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man dead. Police said their names will not be released at the request of their families.

Police said the suspect, 19-year-old Patricia Stevenson, fled from the scene and tried to hide in a yard. During her arrest, the police force said she was injured by a police dog, leaving her with bite injuries severe enough to necessitate a trip to a local hospital.

Stevenson is now facing two charges of second-degree murder, along with charges of possession of a loaded/prohibited firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Stevenson was scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court on Wednesday morning, the police force noted.

Local resident heard sounds of gunfire

Michael Burt, who lives in the area, said he thought the sounds he heard were from a car backfiring at around dawn.

“There was two loud bangs in quick succession,” he said.

He said a police officer later informed him two people “died in a shooting.”

“I’m shocked,” Burt said. “I know this can be a rough neighbourhood at times.”

Tears, apologies at 19-year-old’s first court appearance

As Stevenson was ushered into the prisoner box by a guard, one of her family members began to wail.

“Sorry, Mom,” Stevenson said toward the Regina Provincial Court gallery. “I love you.”

Judge Marylynne Beaton read the charges while Stevenson stood with her hands in front of her.

Crown prosecutor Ethan Reis opposed the 19-year-old woman’s release and sought no-contact orders, which Judge Marylynne Beaton approved.

Stevenson’s case was adjourned until Aug. 19 to give her time to apply for Legal Aid.

As she was escorted back to the cell, Stevenson put her hand up against the glass where her mom’s hand was resting.

“How’s my baby?” Stevenson asked.

Her mother responded that the baby was fine and was being taken care of before the guards took Stevenson back into custody.
