The milestone marks the end of a $17.4 million project that spanned two full construction seasons. Work on the major transportation corridor was split into two phases, with the southbound overpass wrapping up in 2025 and the northbound structure finishing this month.
The busy route serves as a critical connection point on the north side of Regina, linking traffic coming off the Ring Road to Highway 6 and Highway 11.
“The Albert Street North overpass project delivers important improvements to one of Regina’s key transportation corridors,” Kurtis Doney, deputy manager of city operations, said in a news release on Oct. 9.
“By increasing clearance height, rehabilitating the structures and upgrading safety features, we are extending the life of these overpasses while reducing the risk of costly collisions and disruptions for motorists.”
A key feature of the upgrade involved physically raising the clearance height of the overpasses by 0.6 metres (approximately two feet). City officials say increasing this gap will significantly reduce the risk of structural damage caused by over-height semi-trucks and commercial vehicles.
In addition to raising the bridges, crews completely reconstructed the top side of the overpass decks and refurbished the existing foundations below.
The structures were also fitted with modern concrete barriers and guardrails to bring the corridor up to current safety standards.
