An apparent interruption in photo radar enforcement in Saskatchewan is concerning to Regina’s police chief.
“I’m hoping that people are still exercising good judgment when it comes to obeying the posted speed limits,” Chief Lorilee Davies said.

“Certainly we have traffic officers, patrol officers who are out on those streets and roadways 24/7, and so just because that photo radar isn’t in place right now doesn’t mean that they won’t be held accountable.”
The Crown insurance company would not comment on the status of specific photo radar locations, but said that speed enforcement locations would be temporarily inactive at times during the transition to a new vendor.
Davies believes photo radar has been effective.
“The ticket numbers are quite steady throughout the years,” she said. “Anecdotally, driving, you know that when there’s a camera coming up everybody is slowing down, and so I think that that is good to keep those speeds under wraps.
“And I think we need to rely on all the tools we can to ensure that people are following our traffic safety laws.”
She also said the revenue the cameras generate from tickets is helpful for traffic safety initiatives and improvements. Revenue from urban locations is divided between the province, SGI for cost reimbursement, the municipality, and the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund.
The program, when operating, generates an average of $1.3 million in fines per month, according to SGI.
Saskatoon police said in June that it would try to increase traffic patrols in the areas where speed cameras are used.
Nine cameras were moved between 27 locations around the province, including one camera moved between six sites on Ring Road in Regina.
